The South Rotunda Refurbishment 2017

The city of Glasgow is famous for the mighty River Clyde, a river that hides the Glasgow Harbour Tunnel - A three part tunnel connected by the Grade B listed building South Rotunda and its twin the North Rotunda which was built back in 1895.

The tunnel closed its doors to the public and had two of the three tunnels filled.

Derelict and run down, the South Rotunda building, originally designed by engineers Simpson & Wilson, was in desperate need for redevelopment which is where main contractor Project Management & Construction Ltd, Architects GD Lodge and Tiling Contractor M&R Tiling became involved, breathing new life into his historical gem of Glasgow’s golden industrial age.

South Rotunda Glasgow Refurbishment

Architects GD Lodge had the hard job of designing a functioning building on top of an enclosure style foundation.

Showing us that anything is possible with the right tools and team, they contacted CTD Architectural Tiles, requesting a selection of tile ranges to fit in with the redevelopment of the South Rotunda whilst providing practical and technical benefits.

Specification Manager Isabella Greer was on hand to help, providing CTDA Athens Range & CTDA Scala Range.

CTDA Athens is a porcelain tile range inspired by cement floors and is created using the very latest in digital printing technology - a fantastic mix between industrial refinement and innovative modern technology.

This tile range creates harmony in elegant and distinctive spaces with each tile having a different design, available in natural and honed finish with 4 colours & sizes available.

CTDA Scala is a range of matt wall tiles which can be placed horizontal, vertical or even in a herringbone design.

Each of the plain colour matt finish tiles works particularly well with the Kesme Mosaic from the same range to create stunning feature walls and borders.

Restored to its former glory, the South Rotunda building has been taken off the ‘at risk’ list and is a fully functional space occupied by owners Malin Group – A Marine engineering firm.

Main Contractor Project Management & Construction announced that the project for the refurbishment of the South Rotunda building was given ” highly Commended” award at the 2017 RICS awards in the highly contested conservation category and passed on thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in the delivery of this excellent project including CTD Architectural Tiles.

We caught up with CTD Architectural Specification Manager Isabella Greer to see what she had to say about the project and what made it special to be part of.

I was born & raised in Glasgow till my late teens & extremely proud to call myself a Glaswegian, there is a “auld” Scottish saying “You can take the girl out of Glasgow, however you can never take Glasgow out the girl” with this in mind I was thrilled when GD Lodge Architects requested my assistance to source a tile range which would complement this historic building and bring it back to its former glory for all to admire and stand once again proud on the banks of the famous River Clyde.

The finished result speaks for itself, amazing.
